Summary of Post
The Editor-in Chief is responsible for producing the Imperial College Student body’s newspaper, Felix. The newspapers’ role is to inform, entertain, and hold the College and the Union to account.
You will be joining the Officer Trustee team directly and will be supported by a team of student volunteers. In turn, you will help those volunteers to develop relevant skills, as well as handling the operational and financial aspects associated with running the paper.
We are looking for a self-starter who is personable and relatable, has a can-do attitude, can adapt in a fast-paced environment, and enjoys working across various departments and partners.
This role is on a Part-time, 0.8 FTE Fixed-term contract until 31 July 2025. Please see Job Description for more information.
Duties and responsibilities
- Be ultimately responsible for all matters pertaining to the operation and publication of Felix, both online and in print, ensuring that standards of good journalism are upheld
- Provide training and support to members of the Felix society
- Maintain, upkeep, and make accessible to students and the public, the Felix archive
- Be responsible, with the assistance of the Felix society committee, for the social maintenance and health of the Felix society
- Be financially responsible for the Felix society
- To report regularly on their activities and that of the newspaper to relevant partners
Essential requirements
Our ideal candidate will have experience of further or higher education. In addition to experience, skills, and knowledge of:
- Experience of volunteer/people management, motivating individuals to perform well
- Experience of writing copy/having communicated information in an intriguing, readable manner
- Understanding of Imperial College London’s structures and activities
- A thorough understanding of issues relevant to Imperial students and readers of Felix
- Knowledge of general news and current affairs acquired from a wide and multifaceted range of sources, especially in the UK HE sector
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritise and sort information, proactively seek out information for reporting purposes
- Ability to manage the time of others, especially in the context of meeting publication deadlines
- Ability to work independently to deliver projects and meet deadlines, as well as working constructively as part of a wider team
